Our nation was founded on the existence of God. When we declared our independence from Britain our founding fathers acknowledged God as Creator of this earth. The first reference to our God was in the first complete sentence and paragraph in our Declaration of Independence.

 

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”

 

The second reference to God and Creator comes in the first sentence of the second paragraph.

 

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

 

There is no doubt of the intent our founding fathers had when they were declaring our independence from Britain.

That God was their moral compass for establishing this nation.

 

 

There are certain people who try to argue that this nation was established as a secular nation by saying that our Constitution is a godless document. However, we get a very direct clarification of the framers intent in the First Amendment.

 

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

 

Clearly, they wanted to make sure that the government could not establish an official "Church of the United States."

They wanted to keep the government out of the church, not God out of the government.

 

We can easily see just how important God was to the people by looking at the constitutions of the 50 States that make up our nation. Listed here, in alphabetical order, are the opening lines of their preambles for your review.

What is a Preamble?  The Preamble is an introduction to a constitution, statute etc. stating the reason for it and its purpose. You will see below the Preambles of each State and see how God Almighty played a role in its establishment.

Alabama 1901, Preamble. We the people of the State of Alabama, invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God, do ordain and establish the following Constitution.

     Pre-amble: 1. an introduction, esp. one to a constitution, statute, etc., stating the reasons for it and its purpose

                       2. an introductory fact, event, etc.

 

 

Preamble of the United States Constitution

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Definition: Blessing

  1. the act of prayer of one who blesses; invocation or benediction
  2. a grace said before or after eating
  3. the gift of divine favor

 

Definition: Posterity

  1. all of a person descendants
  2. all succeeding generations

 

Definition: Ordain

      1. a. To invest with ministerial or priestly authority; confer holy orders on.

          b. To authorize as a rabbi.

      2. To order by virtue of superior authority; decree or enact

 

 

Here is the preamble with the definitions in place of the above words:

 We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the gift of divine favor of Liberty to ourselves and our succeeding generations, do order by virtue of superior authority and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

One only needs to reread the Preamble to the Constitution and analyze it objectively to ascertain that God is in these words.
